I’ll give you my perspective on violin pegs, based on my 45 years of tuning, and 40 years of adjusting and installing them:
Traditional hardwood/ebony pegs when properly fitted and MAINTAINED, plus knowing all the techniques and tricks of tuning serve me well for tuning violin family instruments. I’m also familiar with the use of fine tuners, which make fine tuning easier for most people.—Fine tuners, however add weight and compromise the string length. The Wittner tuner tailpiece is light weight and works out well in maintaining correct string length proportions. However, it is not always match well with the rest of the set up, such as boxwood and rosewood fittings. My favorite violin, which I play regularly, is set up with rosewood pegs and one small fine tuner on the E string. I rub a small amount of peg dope (Hill’s Peg Compound) on each peg when I change strings every few months. At this point, I’ll talk about Wittner Fine Tune Pegs. Players who have reached their middle years and older often experience discomfort with tuning due to arthritis. These pegs look like ebony pegs, are lighter, easier to tune with, and apparently require less maintainence than other mechanical pegs. I have and will install these for players. They come in two sizes, so far, for full size violins.

pictures of inside the bass top after the bass bar has been re-glued. upon removal we found some leftover stain and finish which had dripped in through the F-holes when it was made. we decided that since the top was off we should clean up the inside around the cleats. there is also some left over hide glue built up around the edges from previous repairs of the lower bout. we scraped all that off as well.
these 2 images are of the before and after top cleanup. will be re-gluing the top of the bass next.
